Summer heat did more than strain engines and cooling systems on construction sites this season. For excavators with aging electrical systems, rising temperatures created a serious fire risk that many operators overlooked.

 

Heat expansion and contraction cycles took a toll on rubber wire insulation. As temperatures climbed during the day and dropped at night, insulation cracked and peeled back, exposing bare copper wiring. The exposed wires then caused short circuits and sparks.

 

When these sparks occurred near engine blocks coated with accumulated oil and fuel residue—common on older machines—fires started within seconds. Industry safety data indicated that electrical system failures were one of the leading causes of equipment fires during summer months.

Cracked wires should have been replaced immediately rather than taped.

 

These inspections took approximately five minutes per machine but prevented catastrophic losses—equipment destroyed by fire, costly downtime, and potential operator injuries. For fleet managers, the message was clear: those five minutes of prevention were worth more than the cost of a new wiring harness.
