Unmanned Excavators & Smart Grading Standard Debut at Tech Fest
Publication Date: 2026-07-08

The 2026 Engineering Machinery Technology Festival, held in Hangzhou, brought the industry's latest advancements in unmanned equipment, AI-powered solutions, and intelligent construction technologies into the spotlight. Leading manufacturers showcased autonomous excavators, unmanned mining trucks, and smart equipment capable of coordinated cluster operations, demonstrating a clear shift toward fully connected and intelligent job sites.

Industry Moves to Establish Unified "Intelligence Grading" Standard

At the same event, a major industry milestone was reached as the China Construction Machinery Industry Association convened a working group discussion on the "Intelligent Grading for Construction Machinery" group standard. The standard aims to establish a unified classification system for construction machinery intelligence, covering excavators, wheel loaders, cranes, graders, and other equipment categories.

More than 30 leading enterprises and institutions participated in the drafting, including Sany, XCMG, Liugong, Shantui, as well as major end-users such as China State Construction, China Railway Group, and China Communications Construction Company. The draft standard is currently open for public review, with feedback accepted until July 18, 2026.

A "Report Card" for Equipment Intelligence

Similar to automotive autonomous driving levels (L1 to L5), the new standard proposes a tiered classification system for construction machinery intelligence. The grading framework is expected to assess the following capabilities:

Perception to Decision-Making: From basic environmental awareness and alerts to fully autonomous operation with cluster coordination

Single-Device to Full-Site Intelligence: Moving beyond smart individual machines to entire job sites with BIM integration and digital twin capabilities

Safety and Efficiency as Core Requirements: Higher intelligence grades must demonstrate reduced accident rates and lower energy consumption

Complementary National Standard Set for August 2026

A complementary national standard, GB/T 47112-2026 "Classification for Intelligent Operations of Mobile Mining Machinery," has also been published. It will take effect on August 1, 2026. This standard covers mobile mining equipment and serves as a reference for construction machinery, agricultural equipment, and firefighting machinery as well.

As these standards move toward implementation, they signal a major shift for the industry: intelligent control is no longer a value-added option but a compliance requirement shaping the future of construction equipment.
